Survey Department (Background)
Survey Department was established in B.S. 2014 as a central mapping agency. The general objectives of the Department are to prepare maps indigenously and to fulfill the various mapping needs of Government of Nepal.
In its early days, the activities of Survey Department were focused mainly on cadastral mapping to assist in the collection of land revenue. In B.S. 2019, legislation was passed and revised in B.S. 2021 to allow the Department to prepare maps and land registers, which helped not only to assess the revenue, but also to give the individual right to his land.

Activities/Objectives
Following are the objectives of Survey Department :
To establish a national network of control points throughout the country.
To study crustal movement to help to predict natural disaster.
To establish the geoidal surface of Nepal and help to find the parameters in establishing the      location of Nepal in the Earth's surface.
To prepare cadastral plans of all the districts of the Kingdom.
To prepare land database and provide land registers when land transaction take place.
To prepare topographical base maps.
To take aerial photography for various developmental planning and mapping works.
To prepare administrative and land resource maps.
To establish National Topographical Database, as well as multi-resolution topographical      database.
To carry out international boundary survey works and to fulfill other international commitments      of Nepal regarding surveying and mapping.
To carry out land use zoning for planning.
To co-ordinate of surveying, mapping remote sensing and GIS activities in Nepal with other      agencies.
To update the various maps and data prepared by the department.
To provide maps, aerial photographs, geodetic data, and other related data required for      planning developmental, educational, administrative and research works by other agencies in      Nepal.
Organizational structure
The Department consists of three Branches to undertake jobs of specific specializations, nine survey parties (Survey Goswaras) and survey offices in each of the 75 districts of the country.
Branches
Geodetic Survey Branch
This branch (Previously known as Trigonometrical Survey Branch ) was created in B.S. 2026 to help in establishing a network of trigonometrical points or control points for cadastral mapping works. These control points are now used, not only to tie in various maps to the national control network system, but also, to study the crustal movements of the Himalayas.
This branch is involved in the measurement of geodetic data of the country and is presently involved in the preparation of a geoidal model for Nepal. Its other responsibilities include taking GPS observations, establishing higher order control points, establishing leveling network in the country, taking astronomical and gravity measurements. Various Geodetic research works have been undertaken through this branch. It has established eleven absolute gravity stations in the country in a North-South sector, several GPS tracking stations. It has been taking supplementary observations at regular intervals. These tracking stations are taking continuous GPS measurements in different parts of the country for tracking the crustal movement of the Indian plate towards the Himalayas.
Cadastral Survey Branch
This branch was created in 2039 B.S. The branch deals with land property mapping, maintaining property records, identifying and types and scientific maintenance of records for LIS use. This branch also has nine units called Goswaras, which are involved in the cadastral mapping and re-mapping works in the district.
Topographical Survey Branch
To prepare diverse kinds of thematic, political, administrative and topographical maps, Topographical Survey Branch was established in B.S. 2032.

This branch publishes a variety of maps aimed at a diverse section of users ranging from the Governmental to different projects. It conducts field surveys for the identification of the country's international boundaries. This branch prepares, revises, updates and prints all thematic, political, administrative, topographical and land use maps. It provides service to its users by providing aerial photographs, topo-maps national atlas and other related data for planning and development activities, research work and education purposes.
