Topographical Survey Program

To prepare diverse kinds of thematic, political, administrative and topographical maps, Topographical Survey Branch was established in B.S. 2032. The programs under this branch of the Suvey Department. This program publishes a variety of maps aimed at a diverse section of users ranging from the Governmental to different projects. It conducts field surveys for the identification of the country's international boundaries. This program prepares, revises, updates and prints all thematic, political, administrative, topographical and land use maps. It provides service to its users by providing aerial photographs, topo-maps national atlas and other related data for planning and development activities, research work and education purposes.

The Topographic Survey Branch has provided infrastructure for carrying out all topographic mapping project. Survey and publication of topographic base maps were initiated in 1992 with JICA assistance for Lumbini zone topographic mapping and rest of the area with the assistance from Government of Finland. Topographical maps of whole Nepal has been prepared and its digital database has already been prepared under National Geographical Infrastructure Program. Major tasks of this program are as follows:

 Provide topographical mapping services including map compilation,     cartographic processing printing.
Prepare & update the topographical base of the kingdom.
Provide services for aerial photography and taking aerial photographs of the     proposed areas, to enlarge & rectify them.
Provide land resources maps and information. (LRMP).
Prepare & update land utilization maps.
Print maps & charts.
Assist in surveying & delineating international boundaries of the Kingdom.
Prepare National Topographic Database & Provide digital data
Establish lower order ground control points and provide mapsheets with     ground control to prepare large scale cadastral map of the country.
Establish and maintain leveling network in the country
Establish and maintain gravity network and determine gravity anamoly of the     country.
Archive the different types of ground control points data as well as other     geodetic information     products and provide services for development     projects.


National Geographic Information Infrastructure (NGII)          Program


In order to assist various organization of Government of Nepal in maintaining accurate and appropriate knowledge of the demographic and socio-economic profile of the country to support the formulation of development policies at central and central and local level, National Geographic Information Infrastructure Program has been launched. The mission of this program formulated as to strengthen planning resources management in Nepal through development of a geographic information infrastructure for the access of geographical and related data for decision. For this, National Topographic Digital Database (NTDB) of the country has been established by digitizing recently prepared topographic base maps at scales of 1:25,000.

The ultimate aims of the program are to establish multi-resolution topographic database , to integrate the NTDB with database of the population census, and also to accommodate as much data of user agencies as possible and to disseminate the data to the users.
